Underneath our skin,
behind our eyes,
beyond our religion,
gender,
sexuality
and social identity,
we are one.

Peel back the exterior,
layer by layer,
and all that’s left
in each of us
is mind,
heart
and soul.

Each of us equally worthy,
each of us equally whole.

But still,
some continue to stand
with guards up.

Hands clutched around weapons,
minds lost in imagined ideas of superiority,
mouths speaking words we’ve worked lifetimes to conquer,
hearts cold to those whose appearance does not match our own.

I’m begging you,
can’t you see?

We are all
simply
Human.
